While the wreck of the Peter Iredale is still well-known, most people are not aware of the grounding of the Galena, which happened near the same spot only three weeks later.
While the wreck of the Peter Iredale is still well-known, most people are not aware of the grounding of the Galena, which happened near the same spot only three weeks later. The Galena was a steel vessel, one of the largest grain ships of the Galena Company out of Liverpool.
During the remainder of the winter enough sand built up around the hull that the Galena was never salvaged, and her remains are likely still buried somewhere near Seaside.
