Looking Over Suspension Bridge Towards Oregon City - c. 1890
This detailed view of the old Oregon City Suspension Bridge, built in 1888, is restored from an original glass negative made shortly after the bridge was completed.
If you look carefully, in Detail View 1, you can read the small sign on the right that states "Pacific Bridge Co., 1888". The larger sign warns travelers on the bridge to slow down - the bridge was not designed for vehicles, even horse-drawn vehicles, moving at high speeds.
Apparent in this photo are the many electric lines. Until the new power plant opened in 1895 on the West Linn side, electricity generated on the Oregon City side was carried across the bridge on its way to Portland.
