According to his notes, this photo was created by Russell Lee on the Fourth of July in 1941. While the scene appears relaxed and peaceful, there was a lot to talk about that day. Although the U.S. was yet to formally join what we now know as World War II, in the previous week Germany had moved deep into the Soviet Union, and the United States was increasing its cooperation with Great Britain to protect North Atlantic shipping lanes.
Within a few months this country would be fighting on both European and Pacific fronts.
