This ornate petroglyph was captured by Markham as part of a series of photos he took in the 1920s, three decades before many of the images were submerged by the filling of the Dalles Dam.
The central image here has been identified as a river spirit. This particular rock was removed before it was flooded, and is now on display in Columbia Hills State Park on the Washington side of the Columbia River.
