This town view of Sumpter was taken by C. C. McBride, better known for his photographs of South Dakota and Nebraska. Perhaps he'd come to Sumpter to participate in the gold fever occurring at this time. Boom times had come to Sumpter with the arrival of the railroad in 1897, expanding the population from 300 to thousands in the next few years.
The brick building on the left in detail view 2 is the First National Bank, built in 1899, The Capital Hotel on the right, shown in detail view 1, and completed in 1897, has been identified as the source of a catastrophic fire that took down the town in 1917.
