This portrait of early Oregon settler John Minto was taken by the Trover - Weigel Studio of Salem towards the end of his long life, when he was about 90 years old. Born in England in 1822, Minto traveled the Oregon Trail to Oregon in 1844.
Taking a donation land claim south of Salem, he became a prominent sheep farmer, and later in 1892 co-authored the "bible" of sheep raising, "Sheep Industry of the United States".
Minto served four terms in the Oregon House of Representatives. He also helped to survey and build trails at both Minto Pass and Santiam Pass. John Minto died in 1915 at the age of 92, and is buried in Salem Pioneer Cemetery.
