Twenty workers from the Newberg Pressed Brick Company pose proudly in this circa 1904 view by Samuel Hobson. The fellow on the left, wearing coveralls over his business suit, is likely the supervisor.
This was the only dry-pressed brick plant in Oregon at the time. The dry press method starts with a thicker clay mix than mud bricks, so it forms more accurate, sharper-edged bricks. The greater force in pressing and the longer burn make it more expensive.
