This is probably the earliest photo of the first Oswego iron furnace, taken in 1866 - a year before Carleton Watkins came from California to create his series of views.
This is probably the earliest photo of the first Oswego iron furnace, taken in 1866 - a year before Carleton Watkins came from California to create his series of views. It appears that workers are celebrating the completion of the main furnace, which produced its first pig iron early in 1867, sold as "Oregon iron" to foundries in Portland and San Francisco.
The thirty-two-foot-high stack, supported by twelve feet of foundation, was built with massive walls to withstand temperatures of 2800 degrees. It operated here until 1885, when the company built a larger furnace about one-half mile to the north.
