Hill's Place, Government Camp, Mount Hood - c. 1935
Looking west down old Highway 26 in Government Camp, we see Hill's Place on the left, and the Battle Axe Recreation Hall on the right. Behind the recreation hall, across the highway from Hill's Place, is the Battle Axe Inn.
Government Camp lodges had an unfortunate history of fire. Just beyond Hill's Place used to stand Government Camp Hotel, which burned in 1933. Both Hill's Place and the Battle Axe Inn eventually succumbed to fires.
Hills Place was known for its Juicy Jumbo Burger, and also for two orphaned bears named Cubby and Teddy, kept in a pen in the front. Tourists could stop for a bite and take their pictures in front of the bears and Mt. Hood.
In detail view 1 you can see a car with the logo for Coon Chicken Inn's Portland location. Today its memorabilia is collected as part of a genre called "racist art".
