Details

This striking view was taken just above water level by railroad worker Willis Vail, who must have reached his vantage point by boat. Devil's Backbone in the left foreground is a 1000 foot long by 50 foot wide dike formed by lava forcing its way up through cracks. It was left exposed when, over thousands of years, softer material surrounding it eroded away.
