A very old logging tool, the jack screw was used to move heavy logs, either in the woods to position them for hauling by oxen (and later by steam donkeys), or in the yards to roll the logs into position.
A very old logging tool, the jack screw was used to turn heavy logs, either in the woods to position them for hauling by oxen (and later by steam donkeys), or in the yards to roll the logs into position for their next ride. In this photo by J. F. Ford, we see the two men on the right posing with their jacks. I'm not sure what the man on the left is holding -- it looks like a small stick...
