This photo of six girls was taken on the steps of Lincoln Bench School, near Ontario, in Malheur County, by Dorothea Lange in October, 1939.
It is one of a series of photos taken by Lange, sponsored by the Federal Farm Security Administration. Forty-two of Lange's Depression-era Oregon photos have recently (2009) been assembled as a traveling exhibit, sponsored in part by the Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission.
