Fort Canby at Cape Disappointment, on the Washington side of the mouth of the Columbia.
A lighthouse was built at Cape Disappointment in 1856, and cannons added in 1862; neither are visible in this photo.
In 1875, the fort was expanded and named for General Edward Canby, who was killed in a battle with the Modocs in northern California in 1873. This photograph was made about 10 years later.
Note the two-piece flagpole in detail 2, possibly fashioned from a ship's mast.
