According to the original caption, this fish wheel near The Dalles would "take out half a ton of salmon daily".
Introduced in the U.S. in North Carolina by 1829, fish wheels were in use on the Columbia River by the late 1870s. Consisting of two large baskets that turn on an axle, fish wheels are rotated by the current and scoop up passing fish as they turn. Captured fish slide down a chute into a holding box that is emptied several times a day.
