Details

Fish wheels, water-powered mechanisms that "mined" salmon, were active on the Columbia River from 1879 through 1934. Many of the larger ones were fixed in position and owned by canneries. Others were built on barges like the one in this image, and could be towed or poled from place to place. This photo was captured by Arthur McAlpin in about 1885, at the time the salmon catch along the Columbia was near its peak.
