Elijah Jones Davidson is best known for discovering the Oregon Caves in 1874. Born in Illinois, he came to Oregon as an infant in a wagon train in 1850. He discovered the caves while out hunting with his dog Bruno, and first saw the interior of the caves using sulfur matches he had brought with him.
A long-time resident of Josephine County, he died in 1927 at the age of 78. This photo of Davidson and his rifle was taken when he was about 70 years old.
