Early Tepee and Canoe, Pend Oreille River - c. 1860

A bark canoe and a reed-mat covered tepee sit across the Pend Oreille River from the British Northwest Boundary Commission's encampment near the Canadian border. A closer look at the tepee reveals its transitional nature. One of the reed mat panels has been replaced by canvas, perhaps obtained from the boundary commission. I've placed this photo in Washington, as that's where the Pend Oreille crosses over from Canada, but it might well be further downstream in Idaho.
