A young optometrist from Rainier, Oregon demonstrates his trial frames and a folding case holding over a hundred sample lenses.
According to an 1895 journal, "A complete set of trial glasses should contain forty-five pairs of convex and concave spherical lenses, and thirty-five pairs of concave and convex cylindrical lenses." The set shown approximates those numbers.
Unlike some forms of medicine, this hundred-year-old version of eye testing still looks familiar to us today. While methods of switching out lenses have become more automated, the basic process has remained the same, and manual trial frames are still widely used in some areas.
