Senator Henry W. Corbett - c. 1867
This photo of Portland merchant Henry Winslow Corbett was likely taken about the time he began his term as U.S. Senator in 1867. Born in Massachusetts in 1827, Corbett arrived in Portland in 1851, where he entered business as a general merchant.
Later he branched out, purchasing the California Stage Line in 1863, and with his brother-in-law Henry Failing purchased almost all the shares of The First National Bank in 1866. He then joined the Failing family business, which was renamed to Corbett, Failing and Company.
Later he served as a director of the Oregon Steam Navigation Company and the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company. Towards the end of his life, he was president of the Lewis and Clark Centennial Commission, beginning in 1902. Corbett died in 1903, and is buried in River View Cemetery in Portland.
