Harvey Whitefield Scott, brother of Abigail Scott Duniway, is best known as the long-time editor and driving force behind the Portland Oregonian newspaper. He was also the first graduate of Pacific University in Forest Grove, and the first person on the west coast to receive a baccalaureate degree when he graduated in 1863.
This unusually early photo of Scott was taken in 1865, about the time he wrote his first editorial for the Morning Oregonian. A year later Henry Pittock, the newspaper's owner, hired him as editor. Except for one short break, Scott remained the editor until until his death in 1910.
