This intense-looking gentleman was one of Oregon's longest-serving public figures, starting as Chief Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court in 1853 and concluding as Mayor of Portland from 1902 through 1905. He served as U.S. Senator from Oregon from 1865 through 1871, and this photo was taken during that term by Alexander Gardner, a former associate of Matthew Brady who left to start his own firm in 1863 in Washington, D.C.
Williams was a pall-bearer at the funeral of his old friend, Abraham Lincoln, in 1865. From 1871 through 1875 he served as U.S. Attorney General for President Grant. He died in 1910 and is buried in Riverview Cemetery in Portland.
