This 1865 portrait was taken by Frank Dalton, shortly after Himes came to Portland from Olympia. The photo is dated May 22; Himes had turned 21 only four days earlier. Dalton apparently only operated his Portland studio for one year, but during that time made portraits of many prominent citizens.
Himes had worked for the Washington Standard in Olympia, and soon went to work for the Oregonian. He later opened his own business as "Himes the Printer". Always interested in history, he helped found the Oregon Historical Society in 1898, and directed that institution until 1938 (when he was 94).
