Linn County, West Linn, and Linnton, Oregon are all named after Senator Linn, who advocated for many years for the Donation Land Claim Act.
Senator (and Doctor) Lewis F. Linn advocated tirelessly for the Donation Land Claim Act. Finally passed after his death, it gave Oregon land to early settlers in return for 4 years worth of improvements.
Doctor Linn was a friend and physician of Robert Moore, the founder of West Linn, so Moore had a personal reason for naming his town in Linn's honor. Originally named Robins Nest, and then Linn City, the town's name was finalized as West Linn when it was incorporated in 1913. Engraved by W. G. Jackman, this portrait appeared as the frontispiece of a biography of Linn published by Appleton in 1857.
