This closeup view shows how the solidly built blockhouse still persisted thirty years after it was abandoned.
Located at the upper end of the Columbia Cascades as part of a number of forts created in the middle 1850s, mostly because of Indian conflicts, the Old Blockhouse was only used for a couple of years.
Note the squared-off logs, punctuated by regularly spaced vertical slots for the rifles of its defenders.
