Details

Fort Lugenbeel, also known as the Upper Blockhouse, was built in 1856 after the "Cascades Massacre" of the Yakima Indian Wars occurred just downstream. This photo was taken four years later, in May, 1860. It complemented Fort Raines, the "Middle Blockhouse", and Fort Cascades, located on an island near the foot of the Cascades. Detail view 1 shows vertical trim boards on the corners, there to protect the exposed ends of the hewn logs used in its construction. If you know the story of the adjacent building shown in detail view 2, please let us know. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
