From the wooden planks in the streets to the barges in the harbor, this view by photographer John F. Ford shows lots of detail. Detail view 1 gives us a closer look at two men standing at the corner of the 1873 Post Office block. Detail view 2 show several modern looking barges with a smaller sailing vessel.
Astoria was booming at this time. The railroad arrived in 1898, bringing with it tourists from Portland and providing a way to transport the old-growth timber that was plentiful in the area.
