This overview of The Dalles looks down Second Street, from the east end of downtown, during the 1894 Columbia River flood.
We can see that most of the commerical buildings are suffering significant damage, while many houses further up the slope are still above water.
Incorporated in 1857, The Dalles was already a mature town with an established business district.
