Looking down Washington Street in The Dalles, during the record-setting June, 1894 flood, with the Columbia River in the distance.
On the left can be seen H. H. Campbell Groceries. Another photo from this series shows a hand-painted sign informing us that the grocery store had temporarily relocated to the Baptist Church, apparently on higher ground.
Across the street from the grocer is A. M. Williams & Company, a clothing store that survived till at least 1946. It appears to be open for business, as its sign advertises its "High Water Entrance".
